Cavity Wall & Loft Insulation Grants:

Current Situation

Two types of insulation grants are available to homeowners and those in private rented accomodation. 100% grants cover the full cost of cavity wall & Loft Insulation. Partial grants for insulation can cover between 40% and 70% of the cost. In both cases, the insulation grants are arranged by the installers and they do not have to be paid back.

Totally FREE Insulation Grants

Anyone aged 70 or above could be entitled to a Cavity Wall Insulation Grant or Loft Insulation Grant that will cover the total cost of cavity wall or loft insulation work.

100% insulation grants are also available to households where any person living in the house is in receipt of one of the following benefits, tax credits or allowances:

• Attendance Allowance
• Income Support
• Council Tax Benefit (single person’s discount and student exemption do not qualify)
• Disability Living Allowance
• Disabled Persons Tax Credit
• Housing Benefit
• Child Tax Credit (net combined household income must be under £15,592, excluding all benefits)
• Working Tax Credit (net combined household income must be under £15,592, excluding all benefits)
• Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit [1]
• Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance
• War Disablement Pension [2]
• Pension Credit (state pension only does not qualify)

You will be required to provide evidence of your age or benefits received in order to claim this fully funded grant.

Do not qualify for a 100% Grant?

If you do not qualify for a 100% insulation grant, don’t worry, you will still qualify for an insulation grant to cover  somewhere between 40% and 70% of the total installation cost. All homeowners & those in rented accomodation are eligible. As a householders you will have to pay a contribution towards the cost. Under normal circumstances this cost will be recouped within one or two years from the savings made on your fuel bills.

Loft Insulation grants have restrictions on the depth of insulation already in your loft. On the 100% schemes, if you are 70 or over, and you have more than about 60mm (2.5 inches) so you may only qualify for a partial grant. If you receive a benefit, the restrictions vary depending on the scheme and the area you live in. An existing depth of up to 100mm (4 inches) is typically allowed on the partial grant schemes.
