• What is a cavity wall?
  • If you have a “cavity wall”  then usually there will be a gap between the two outside walls (brick or block) of about 5cm, the two walls will be attached by metal ties.
• How is the Cavity filled?
  • Holes are drilled (these are made good after!) through the mortar between the bricks, and the insulation material is pumped through from the bottom up.
• How long to complete work?
  • Depends on the size of the property, usually two hours or so.
• How do I know my house is suitable?
  • Prior to any work being done a survey is completed to check you have a cavity, widths, depths, ventilation areas etc.
• Prior to insulation – what should I do?
  • the drilling can cause some vibrations, so you would be advised to move any valuables away from external walls while this is taking place. The installation team will also need clear access to the all the walls being filled – they will need to be able to access attached garages, conservatories, sheds etc.
• What materials are used to fill the cavity wall?
  • There are normally three main types of insulation material, all can be used except formaldehyde foam which cannot be used in certain areas. They all provide an equally efficient insulation for your home.
    • mineral wool [glass wool and rock wool]
    • Bonded polystyrene beads
    • Formaldehyde Foam (a white foam)
• What about ventilation Exits
  • The installer will sleeve [protect] all ventilation exits so that they do not become blocked.
• Will the installers  tidy up?
  • Yes, there will be a little external mess, however the installers will clear up afterward, and fill any holes with a similar mortar to that already in place.
• How long will the insulation last?
  • It should last for the life of the house and doesn’t require any maintenance!
